Richard was the fifth of Charles and Charlotte's eleven children. His family were from London but moved around a lot, Richard was born in Glasgow and his siblings were born in Pontefract, Aldershot, Hackney, Dalston and Greenwich. In 1903 Charlotte and her children were in Lambeth Workhouse, there was no sign of Charles, however by 1911 the family were back together living in Plumstead.

Richard's only connection to Bromley is that his sister Maud married a Bromley man, George Osborn, in 1918. His mother was living at 9 Nichol Lane in 1919 when she was granted a pension of 8/6d per week.
